TOTW #7: “Ichabod”

One of the more mischievous songs on Crooked House, “Ichabod” kicks-off the final third of the album with a darkly humorous spasm of irony and dread.

Eric has written more than a few songs about nightmares he’s had, and this is one of those. He told me about the dream once, and it’s all there in the song-lyric. He’s walking in the woods, surrounded by strange creatures and predators. A shadow approaches him — the baddest of all the creatures — and offers to make him a deal for his safety. So he makes the deal, and indeed the… Continue reading

TOTW #5: “I Know”

…And here we are at Track of the Week #5! If you’ve been following this series, you may have noticed that I’ve been alternating each week between Eric’s songs and my own. It’s another Eric week, so I thought I’d post about the Eric song which brought me into the band, and which seems to be his biggest “hit” overall:

“I Know” is a bristling, chugging, crunchy slab of indie-rock, draped with feedback and ethereal harmonies. It’s equal parts punk-metal and shoegaze, owing much to bands like Hum and Deftones, but with a melodic sensibility of its own… Continue reading

TOTW #1: “The Bird and the Lemming”

I’ve decided to start posting one of our tracks every week — a soundcloud link, and a few of my own short thoughts about it — just for those of you who are interested in this sort of thing.

So, “Track of the Week #1”: Have a listen to “The Bird and the Lemming,” a track from the latter half of our 2016 album, “Crooked House!” One of our simpler tunes, kind of a humorous one — and a duet nonetheless! — this Eric song is all about bad leaders and those who choose to follow them. (At least… Continue reading

Listen to “Landlocked State,” the first single from “Crooked House”

Hark! Music from the new album! Consider this the first single we’re releasing from “Crooked House.” I know that phrase, “first single,” is a little obsolete in these days of digital binging. But we kind of like the old-school aesthetic. At any rate, this is also the first track from the album, and a proper introduction to the content contained within.

Her Face Obscured (2/15/13 jam)

How about some new music? Here’s a weird-but-fun jam culled from a recent rehearsal. That’s Eric playing the simple riff which kicked the whole thing off, Andy on bass, Adam on drums, and yours truly delivering a strange, “King Missile”-inspired story that I made up as I went along. All of it was utterly spontaneous, but it ended up sounding surprisingly surreal and awesome. Take a listen!

Demo: The Wedding Guest

Here’s a new one we’ve been working on! It’s one of my tunes; this solo-demo turned out pretty nice and definitely gets the gist across, but it’ll be better once the band helps develop it a bit. Fodder for the second album, where it will pair nicely with Gary, Landlocked State, Only In My Dreams, and a couple others you probably haven’t heard.

Demo: A Long History

Thought we’d drop a demo of a new song in advance of Thursday’s show. This song doesn’t have anything to do with ninjas, but it does have a ninja-like way of moving the beat around. :-P Listen a time or two, and see if it isn’t the weirdest song you’ve ever had stuck in your head… Continue reading
